Terracotta antefix--the outer face of the lowest tile from a down sloping row of "Corinthian" covering tiles, which covered the curved or upstanding joints of the large horizontal tiles below them, so that no rain could infiltrate the roof). This example, which is apparently not locally produced in the city, but perhaps as other tile and brick in its countryside, seems to date to an Early Imperial building. Rows of similar antefixes thus decorated the lower edge of sloping tile roofs.
