In 1909 J.O. Langford, his pregnant wife and their child settled Hot Springs under the Homestead Act among generations of Mexican farmers—and ancient pictographs created on limestone cliffs by the earliest inhabitants of this harsh, porous borderland that is today dotted with 450 historical sites related to natives and settlers alike.
