In its six years of occupation on the cusp of the Civil War, this frontier fort on the San Antonio-El Paso Road saw mail, settlers and even army camels pass through. Reoccupied in 1867, it became the only Texas outpost attacked by Indians. Ruins of barracks and more remain today.
