In 1686, La Salle's Belle sunk in Matagorda Bay, taking with it the famous explorer's dreams and Louis XIV's New World ambitions. 300 years later it was discovered and painstakingly excavated. Today artifacts from the wreck can be seen at an interconnected series of exhibits at seven nearby museums.
