GLASGOW, SCOTLAND—A sixteenth-century copy of a letter written by Robert the Bruce to England’s Edward II in 1310 has been found by Dauvit Broun of Glasgow University in the British Library. In the letter, Bruce asks the English king to stop persecuting the Scots. “The writing of this letter should be seen as a bold move by Bruce who had perhaps recognized that the tables were turning and he could stand his ground in the face of an advancing English army and open negotiations with the king,” Broun explained. Eventually, four years after the letter was sent, Robert the Bruce’s troops defeated the English army in the Battle of Bannockburn.
