Excavation Complete at Medieval Jewish Cemetery

TOLEDO, SPAIN—Archaeological work was recently completed at a 13th-century Jewish cemetery in Toledo, an important cultural center for medieval Jews before their expulsion from Spain in 1492. First discovered in 2008 after bones were found on the grounds of a school, the cemetery held at least 107 tombs. Archaeologist Arturo Ruiz Taboada notes that the burials were unusually deep, with some as much as nine feet below he surface. After consulting both local and international Jewish groups, authorities ordered the remains to be reburied at the site two years ago.
