FLORENCE—A small dome made of bricks laid in a herringbone pattern has been unearthed near Florence’s Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral. This dome may have been constructed by Filippo Brunelleschi as a model for the dome of the famous church, which he built between 1420 and 1436. “This building technique had been previously used in Persian domes, but Brunelleschi was the first to introduce it into Europe when he worked at the dome,” said Francesco Gurrieri of the University of Florence. The mini dome will be displayed in a new museum at the cathedral.
