KIRIBATI, SOUTH PACIFIC—Ric Gillespie, executive director of The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR), announced that while analyzing sonar data from their search for the wreckage of Amelia Earhart’s lost plane, an anomaly has been found resting beneath 600 feet of water off the coast of Nikumaroro Island. “What initially got our attention is that there is no other sonar return like it in the entire body of data collected. It is truly an anomaly, and when you’re looking for man-made objects against a natural background, anomalies are good,” he said.
