New Excavations Begin at Leicester’s Grey Friars Church

LEICESTER, ENGLAND—Archaeologists from the University of Leicester will expand their excavation of Grey Friars Church. Last September, the team uncovered a hastily dug grave determined to hold the remains of King Richard III, who was killed during the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485. The new dig will investigate additional burials at the site, including a stone coffin that may contain the remains of Sir William Moton, who is believed to have been buried there in 1362. The team may also find the church’s choir area. “What drives us with the project is learning more about medieval Leicester and one of its great religious houses,” said lead archaeologist Richard Buckley.
