
LISBON, PORTUGAL—In a ceremony held at the Mexican Embassy in Lisbon, Portuguese officials repatriated three objects to Mexico, according to a Mexico News Daily report. The artifacts include a female figurine from western Mexico that has been associated with fertility rituals; a Maya vessel dated to the Classic period (A.D. 250–900); and a Zapotec urn featuring Cocijo, the god of rain and fertility “This is the first restitution of pre-Hispanic archaeological heritage from Portugal to Mexico, reflecting institutional collaboration and a shared commitment to combating the illegal trafficking of cultural property,” said Luis Neves of Portugal’s Judicial Police.
