A team of archaeologists led by Piotr Dyczek of the University of Warsaw unearthed ceramic vessels for drinking wine and hundreds of personal belongings at the Roman frontier camp of Novae in northern Bulgaria, where Roman legions were stationed from the mid-first to early fifth century A.D. Among the finds in auxiliary rooms of the camp’s bath complex were a small, intricately crafted silver pendant depicting a mouse and handles of bronze vessels dating to the late second or early third century A.D. Researchers also uncovered a ceramic-tile food-storage container, one of two “refrigerators” discovered so far in the area of the baths where the facility’s attendants would have lived.
