PETEN, GUATEMALA—Tourists at Guatemala’s Maya site of Tikal for an “end of the world party” reportedly damaged Temple II by climbing it. “We are fine with the celebration, but (the tourists) should be more aware because this is a (UNESCO) World Heritage Site,” said Osvaldo Gomez, a technical advisor. More than 7,000 people visited Tikal to watch the ceremony held on December 20, marking the end of the Maya long count calendar. Climbing the temple steps is prohibited.
