PANAMA—A collection of 12 stones thought to have been a collection owned by a shaman nearly 5,000 years ago has been found in Panama’s Casita de Piedra rock shelter. The rocks, including translucent quartz, pyrite, and rocks containing magnetite, were found in a cluster and may have been kept in a leather bag, according to Ruth Dickau of the University of Exeter. “We will never be entirely sure how the ancient people used the stones in the past,” she said. Evidence of cooking and tool making over a long period of occupation has also been uncovered in the rock shelter.
