INTERLOCHEN, MICHIGAN—A diver from the Great Lakes Exploration Group has recovered a block of wood that had been shaped by humans and blackened on all sides, as if it had been in a fire. The group, assisted by French archaeologists, is looking for Le Griffon, a ship built by French explorer Robert de La Salle and lost on its maiden voyage on Lake Michigan in 1679. The team is permitted to dig three more test holes at the site, located in 2001. If identified as Le Griffon, the shipwreck will belong to France.
