CHICLAYO, PERU—According to the Miami Herald, a temple adorned with brightly colored paintings and carved sculptures—including one depicting a being with a human body, bird’s head, feline features, and reptile claws—has been unearthed on the northwestern coast of Peru. Archaeologists believe the temple dates to some 5,000 years ago when members of the Lambayeque or Sican culture dominated the region. Atop a high stepped platform at a neighboring site, archaeologists uncovered a much later temple dating to around 700 or 600 a.d. that belongs to the Moche culture. A burial of a child of about five or six years old was found next to the temple. To read about a vast ancient city in northern Peru, go to "Peru's Great Urban Experiment."
