CHICLAYO, PERU—According to the Miami Herald, a temple adorned with brightly colored paintings and carved sculptures—including one depicting a being with a human body, bird’s head, feline features, and reptile claws—has been unearthed on the northwestern coast of Peru. Archaeologists believe the temple dates to some 5,000 years ago. Atop a high stepped platform at a neighboring site, archaeologists uncovered a much later temple dating to around a.d. 600 or 700 that belongs to the Moche culture. A burial of a child of about five or six years old was found next to the temple. To read about a vast ancient city in northern Peru, go to "Peru's Great Urban Experiment."
