BATH, ENGLAND—Four years after three seventeenth-century vases went missing from an archaeological site, they were spotted for sale in an online auction. Such Bellarmine vessels, named for a Roman Catholic clergyman, were traditionally used to protect against witchcraft. A former archaeologist employed by the Museum of London Archaeology on the dig has admitted to the theft and has been ordered to perform 270 hours of community service. The vases will be handed over to the Roman Baths Museum.
